So disk 2 was fine and booted fine in the NAS by itself? Suggest you backup your data ASAP if you haven't already.
Does sound like disk 1 is well and truly dead.
Use one of the codes from this page: http://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/support/seatools/seatools-test-codes.html
Use e.g. "6FD1A1AE". I wouldn't use the Apple code as the drive was from the NAS, not the Mac.'
Well you can only really confirm the disk is bad by putting it inside a PC and testing it using SeaTools that way, but your NAS hanging the way it did indicates you almost certainly have a bad disk.
