Cannot uninstall or upgrade Squeezebox on ReadyNAS Duo v1

On re-reading my posting, I realise that I spent too much space explaining how the problem evolved, and did not state the problem clearly from the outset.
That isn't going to help anyone to offer me a solution.
So here is the problem:
I cannot uninstall the existing (non-working) SqueezeCenter add-in, and I get the error log message "error removing add-on package"
And I also cannot install the new Logitech Media Server add-in, and I get the pop-up error message "invalid checksum detected in the update file. update aborted"
I would really be grateful to anyone who can offer me a way forward.
My first posting explained all the steps I have taken so far.
