It sounds to me like the problem is the drive. Your network connections won't be causing the NAS to freeze like it has I don't think. If the drive is healthy then it may be a compatibility issue.
Have you tried eliminating your router ( ie just use the switch) from the network path and setting fixed IP addresses on PC or mac and readynas?
