Can't Delete Time Machine Sparsebundle
I have a ReadyNas Duo, and am trying to delete a time machine sparsebundle on the drive. I have logged in as admin to the ReadyNas, shown hidden files, and can see the sparsebundle file. However when I try to delete it the finder window pops up with "Preparing to delete immediately", and it never actually deletes. I have left this running for hours, and still it doesn't delete.
At this point I have a 600MB+ time machine backup and I can't delete it! I have looked through all the forums and tried various other methods to delete (connecting different via AFP, SSH, using terminal), all with the same results.

- kzoniesAspirantI meant 600 GB, not MB.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredDeleting via SSH is the fastest method and should be fairly quick. With the correct command entered this will always work. SSH access does require that you have EnableRootSSH installed and you do have to connect as the 'root' user.
An alternative is to create a new share e.g. TMtemp
Login to CIFS as admin, and browse to the hidden ".timemachine" folder on the C share, you can do this by in the Finder selecting Go > Connect to Folder and typing "/Volumes/c/.timemachine"
Then also open in another Finder window /Volumes/c/TMtemp and move the sparse bundle to the TMtemp share. Then go into Frontview and delete the TMtemp share. This will get the NAS to delete the sparsebundle which is much faster than deleting it across your network. - kzoniesAspirantThe TMTemp approach didn't work either - I had the same effect. "Preparing to move...." dialog and it spun and spun
So, I did the SSH thing. Took me a bit to figure out all the commands, but after about an hour of chugging (after doing the rm -rf .sparsebundle command) it finally deleted. Phew.
Thanks for your help. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retiredrm -rf .sparsebundle would do nothing as there's no file with that name. You have to either specify the sparsebundle name or do e.g. "rm -rf *.sparsebundle" to delete all sparsebundles.
- kzoniesAspirantSorry I wasn't clear - I did use the full sparse bundle name to delete the one directory.
- Martin4x4AspirantStill finding my way!
I would also like to delete a sparsebundle!
Two probelms 1/when I try to log in to CISF as admin - password (I've not yet changed the default) it just wiggles 2/ I cannot see the C in Finder. I've set finder so that it shows the .dot files.
As in a previous post I don't have frontview but the new version 'ReadyNAS' ? (very confusing to give this this name - I think!) - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe new interface is the Dashboard. There is a known issue with the firmware for the v2 which means that admin access via CIFS is not possible at this time. See http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=346413#p346413
- Martin4x4AspirantThank you for the information, and also putting me right on the Dashboard name!
How long does it normally take for a Firmware update to be made? Is there any alternative way to delete the sparsebundle, or will I have to be patient? - jayden1AspirantI had the same issue as kzonie's first post.
Thanks to mdgm - his method for deleting the Time Machine files worked beautifully. I followed your instructions to make a temp share, move the files to that share via CIFS in Finder, then delete the share through Frontview.
Many thanks! :D - Martin4x4AspirantDoes not work on the Duo V2!
I am unable to log on as admin! Would like to know when I can expect the firmware update - which will allow this
