One possibility is to double-route (put a second router behind the one Virgin installed). It is a bit harder to manage port forwarding (you need to add forwarding rules to both routers), but it does insulate you from the provider. You'd need separate IP address ranges (for instance, 192.168.0.x for one, and 192.168.1.x for the other).
