Change of reserved UID ?

I am using a Ready NAS DUO with Linux and NFS. So I need to be consistend with my user ID's on several Linux PC's.
I have Radiator 4.1.7. installed.

The problem seems that the Ready NAS is using UID starting with 1000 for the shares.
However this are the standard UID for every Linux system. So I have UID on my Linux starting with 1000 as well.
If I like to add a user and will use for example UID 1005, I am getting an error messange for Invalid UID.

Is there any possibility to change the UID for the shares ?

Thanks for any hint !

  • When you create a share on the NAS, the NAS creates both the share and a hidden user with the same name as the share, with the owner of the share being this new user - this is due to legacy and cannot be disabled.

So if you do not have a user with that UID, then the error you are getting is probably due to one of these hidden users taking the desired UID

The UIDs can safely be changed (I have UIDs sync'ed this way across 2 NAS and 5 clients), but only by editing the passwd file directly on the NAS and so you must enable root ssh access to you NAS to do this. If my diagnosis is correct, simply change the UID of the user(s) named after shares in /etc/passwd, but remember you may have to correct ownership permissions on those shares
  • Hello Sphardy,
    thank you for your hint.
I did use the export function of the configuration files
In ReadyNAS Duo you can find under System -> Save Settings.
I did export the User and Group settings. I did change the UID in passwd and after that I did made a recovery of the changed file.
After restart for the ReadyNAS everything did work as expected.
Of course I had to correct the ownership permissions.

    Thanks again.

How exactly did you correct the ownership permissions?

Also can anyone recommend UID's that could be used for the default shares safely?

Check out the command "chown" - which enables you to change both owner and group IDs for files & folders
Also the command "usermod" if you are not comfortable editing setup files directly

Depending on the OS, UIDs of <1000 are typically reserved for OS usage. Newer ReadyNAS firmware releases appear to be using UIDs of 10000 and higher for the UIDs associated with shares. I tend to use IDs of 2000+, usually safe.

    Thanks,

I logged in and ran usermod -u 2000 <user> should I need to do anything else or will the permission automatically be updated?
