Connect 10TB USB drive to ReadyNAS 3138

Hi,

I have an external USB drive w/ 10TB as of now formatted with ExFat.

It does not show up in the frontend (System page) of my ReadyNAS 3138.

dmesg shows this:

In the backup howto it is stated that the preferred format is ext4.  The notes at the bottom say that one should try NTFS or FAT32 if the disk is not showing up.

Since this is a brand new disk I would like to make sure that I can use it with my NAS as I otherwise may still return it.

So my questions are:

  • Can this disk be used?
  • Which format shall I use?
  • How shall I format it, can I use a command line directly on the NAS?
    (see dmesg info above)

Thanks a lot in advance.

  • The ReadyNAS does not natively support EXFAT, but I understand you can install exfat-fuse and exfat-utils via SSH.  Since my backup is to other NAS, I've not tried it myself.

Personally I disagree with that advice for backup.  If your PCs can't read the backup, then it isn't worth much.  So I recommend choosing a format you can read on your other PCs.  NTFS can be read and written by Windows, and read by Mac.

If you have a Windows PC, I would format it there.  I'd start by going into the windows disk manager, and delete any partitions that are on the drive.  Then create a new one, and initialize it.  Format using NTFS (as noted above).
