The ReadyNAS does not natively support EXFAT, but I understand you can install exfat-fuse and exfat-utils via SSH. Since my backup is to other NAS, I've not tried it myself.

Personally I disagree with that advice for backup. If your PCs can't read the backup, then it isn't worth much. So I recommend choosing a format you can read on your other PCs. NTFS can be read and written by Windows, and read by Mac.

If you have a Windows PC, I would format it there. I'd start by going into the windows disk manager, and delete any partitions that are on the drive. Then create a new one, and initialize it. Format using NTFS (as noted above).
