See page 26 of your wdtv manual (http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/U ... 705062.pdf) When you select a content source, you choose "network share" and not "media server". There is no need for custom firmware.

Personally I don't consider CIFS access a workaround, often you get a better experience with CIFS or NFS with media players. If the player has direct access to the folder, then it is solely responsible for the UI presentation and features.
