Corruption when reading large files from an RN31400 over SMB

When I copy a large file (example: Ubuntu 24.04.3 ISO, 6.3 GB) from my RN31400 NAS to my local drive on a Windows 10 machine using SMB, the file will almost always contain at least one error (as detected with fc /b). If I copy the same file to the same drive when the machine is booted into Linux and using NFS, the file will contain no errors. Has anyone run into this? I'm using the latest NAS firmware (6.10.10).

  • Short answer: I fixed the problem by moving the hard drives from the RN31400 to an RN42400.

The corruption was not an NFS vs. SMB problem. Judging from the NAS activity light, it looks like the data was corrupted less frequently on NFS because the reads were often being read from an NFS cache.

I ran a disk test and a scrub on the NAS. No errors were found. I replaced the Ethernet switch and cables, but there was still data corruption. Finally, I moved the hard drives from the RN31400 to my RN42400, and there was no more data corruption.

I ran a memory test on the RN31400, and there was an average of about three errors per pass. I suspect that a large file, such as the Ubuntu ISO, filled more of the NAS's buffer, resulting in an increased probability (versus small files) of being stored in bad memory.

    Not something I've seen.

Any errors in the log zip?

Have you run the NAS volume maintenance functions (particularly disk test and scrub)?

I am wondering if the problem is network-related.  Try running ifconfig on the NAS before and after the transfer, and look for drops and overruns.

While I don't typically copy really large file to my PC, I do have a couple of very large Veracrypt files that I access from a PC on a regular basis.  Any corruption such as you are seeing would likely make the volume inaccessible, and I've seen none.

Now, because of an issue with VeraCrypt, strict sync is turned off on the share that contains the VeraCrypt volumes.  So, you might want to try disabling it and see if it fixes the problem, though Strict Sync usually affects writes instead of reads.
