**please do not use this as the way the client 'should' be updated, it's purely a suggestion & how it worked for me**
Here's how I updated mine, from 3.4.1->3.5.2,
This is purely for info as I'm unsure what I'm doing! Which is pretty dangerous when your data could be at risk...!!!
After attempting to run the uninstall scrips as recommended on Crashplans website, I kept on receiving error messages stating it was already installed when I tried to instal the new version.
here's where i found a possible solution.

after reading up on the internet, I deleted the directory ' /var/lib/crashplan ' which still had files in it then I was then able to install the new version. All been working fine now for over a week.
**read the article though, as it warns that crashplan keeps some information in this folder relating to the computer it's install on**
PS-thanks to the original posters for the step-by-step guide for the actual installation, it's greatly appreciated.
PPS-I have no idea how to update java, I've found various guides but I've been unsuccessful so far on my NVX, as i could not afford to brick my Ultra.
