Although I cannot answer your question directly see below, as my set-up is far less complicated, as I back directly to Crashplan, no additional complication of friends machines.
+ I'm unsure of the full behaviours of crashplans adoption process if you have deleted files etc...
I've just completed the following;
Deleted /var/lib/crashplan & and the installation crashplan directory (purely out of personal choice; to ensure I've got the correct dir, I use rm & the dirname... then once I receive the error it's a directory etc, I change to use the command, rm -rf ....)
The results,
After installing the latest client on my ultra, when I opened crashplan, I had to ADOPT the previous machine, eg my readynas ultra. That was certainly different to the last time, as I'm sure it just worked?
It's currently performing a block level sync,
when it's finished - I'll let you know if it has removed any deleted files.
