Just an update that I seem to have gotten this working with an uninstall/re-install of crashplan. Well, actually a second re-install.
When I first noticed there was both a S01crashplan and S99crashplan link in /etc/rc5.d directory I thought something was off. I wondered if the two files could be from two different installs because I had already re-installed once.
Prior to the third install, I made sure there were no crashplan related files in /etc/init.d, rc2.d or rc5.d. Or in the /etc dir at all for that matter. I also removed the /usr/local/crashplan and /var/lib/crashplan dirs.
The third install created just one S99crashplan link in rc5.d and I rebooted to test and it ran on startup as expected.
I can't be sure now, but I believe S01crashplan was from the first install. I wonder if this is possibly an issue with CrashPlan's latest installer. Anyway, hopefully this helps if anyone runs into the same thing.
I still don't understand however why the different priority of 99 vs 01 causes crashplan not to start.
