CP does update on its own, I don't know about java
crashplan didn't change your virtual memory. It is simply allocating 1 GB of it.
I don't understand your comment on max file number.
On remote access - you'd also need to forward port 22 for ssh. Personally I'd rather not do that. Instead I connect to a home PC with remote desktop, and run the crashplan gui on that home pc.
