CrashPlan performance

Just got up and running with CrashPlan on my PRO 6, and was wondering what upload speeds people are seeing.

So far I am generally seeing between 5 and 12 mbps (much slower than my internet uplink). Large files seem to go slower. This speed is acceptable, though it would be nice to speed it up.

I am allowing the engine to take up to 90% of the CPU, and adjusted the WAN transmit buffer to 2560 bytes (both based on Crashplan FAQ suggestions). Compression is on, and deduplication set to "automatic". Setting it to "minimal" doesn't seem to change much.

The Pro is reporting load averages in the .90 to 1.05 range, so it appears to be CPU bound. (Overall performance of NAS is still good).

Anyway, I am wondering what other folks are seeing, and if they are getting faster backup speeds what their settings are.

I have it installed on one PC (also doing PC->NAS), but hadn't paid much attention to it. I just checked, it appears to have similar speeds. I guess the main value of the "friend" backup is when the remote system is in another location. There are much faster ways to do local backup (including Frontview).

Seems like my dream of using CrashPlan might be bursting. Maybe i should take a closer look at FrontView instaed

Well, Crashplan is great for backup over the internet. I've been using it over a year now, and have been happy with it.

But it is exactly that, and nothing more. I had hoped that the speed over LAN was goof enough to just use this one product
  • StephenB--> I'm considering a headless CP setup on my Pro6, so I have a few questions: 1) Are you still using it and still pleased with its performance overall? 2) Does CP allow you to send them one of your HDs to make the initial backup startup go a bit less painfully? (I only have about 5mbps upload over my home's ISP), 4) has there been any community add-on developed for CP interfacing? 5) what is java needed for in the step-by-step setup routine?

    Thanks!

I am still using it, and am happy with the service. Though I did need to increase the pro's memory to 2 GB a while back - as the number of files on the NAS grows, Crashplan needs more memory. Note I am using it for disaster recovery, I don't think I'd trust any cloud service to be my only backup.

Crashplan does have a "seeded backup" program (http://support.code42.com/CrashPlan/Lat ... ded_Backup). They send you the disk, and the capacity limit is 1 TB (anything more than that is backed up over the internet after the initial seeding). It was fairly expensive, and it wouldn't have saved me any time anyway (given the 5-7 day shipping in each direction). So I didn't use it. How much data do you have?

I don't know of any community add-on. One of my PCs has the client installed, and I use putty to connect the PC client with the pro. Though most of the time I just use putty/ssh to view the tail of the backup log ("tail /usr/local/crashplan/log/backup_files.log.0 -n 100" works nicely).

Crashplan is written in java, so there is no way to avoid installing it.
