Sounds like it could have been something that was corrupt in the OS. Hence the reason the technician had you test the disks and then if all was good, reinstall the firmware (OS reinstall). It's always a good idea to have a backup drive regardless. The usual recommendation is to replace the drive after 50 reallocated sectors. I have seen the drives functioning well beyond that number though. Sounds like you have a sound plan.
