I spoke with support last night and after about 30 minutes of discussion, the L2 tech concluded the same as I did, that there is some sort of software/firmware issue.
The only problem he can see is that when the device or drives go into a power saving mode, it does not give them enough time to spin back up before claiming drive death.
He escalated my case to the developers/engineers. So now I'm just waiting. I'll let you all know when/what i hear back.
