Disk spin-down and power consumption

We are evaluating a 312 system prior to purchasing a reasonably large quanity of the new OS-6 based ReadyNAS devices, 312s, 314s, etc. They will be deployed to replace existing ReadyNAS Duo systems that are getting old and most likely will start to fail.

Part of the justification was 'power savings' -- i.e. a newer 'green' machine that would be Energy Star (or equivalent) compliant. Additionally we have directives to insure replacement systems are more energy efficient.

The older systems had an automatic disk spin-down option after some specified amount of time -- System/Power. Good feature and we believe it saves on hardware -- improved lifetime and certainly saves on the power consumption.

A Netgear Technical Support person has indicated that this option has not been implemented in the OS-6 product. If that is true we need to seriously reconsider our situation.

Was the support person correct or is there an option he is not aware of or I can find.

The option has not been implemented yet, but there are some postings in this forum that suggest that it is planned.
  • Thanks for the verification. This is a real shame.

There are statutory requirements regarding energy savings in some jurisdictions. Our deployment took a large step backward.
