Does ReadyNAS 500 series support shtml and SSI includes?

Hmmm, the default setup of ReadyNAS 516 opens and displays .shtml files, but doesn't perform the Server Side Include (SSI). Very unfortuneately, because my entire site is based on this principle. To include the left hand menu and banner, I use: <!--#include file="menu.html" -->. But the menu and banner don't show up. The rest of the page does.
Apache says to enable SSI by adding settings to httpd.conf. (See: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/howto/ssi.html). I managed to switch on SSH on the ReadyNAS, so I can use "SSH in a box". A find for httpd.conf doesn't return any results.
What is the correct way to enable Server Side Includes on ReadyNAS 516?
EDIT: Still didn't find a way to switch it on. Requested an addon. Read more on this post:
