Drive Lost after 5.3.11 update

Well something happened. Without looking at your logs it is quite difficult to speculate.
So long as you maintain good backups the filesystem shouldn't be an issue. Most NAS units run on Linux. Filesystems such as EXT4 and more recently BTRFS on our ReadyNAS OS devices are used.
It sounds like for the internal drive at least you might have encountered a rare software issue, though equally if the logs show SMART errors then that would suggest a problem with the disk.
Even if you won't use the NAS for primary storage you could use it for backups. If your data is important to you don't store it on just the one device. Also make sure you make regular backups with one copy stored off-site at all times.
