Dropbox on my readynas 104

Hi all,

Is there a way to install dropbox onto my ready nas?

I know there's the drobox backup feature built into the cloud tab on front view but I'm lead to believe that will only sync from my chosen has folder to the cloud. Basically what I'm asking is is there a dropbox app for arm that works the same way as the PC version?

Thanks!:-)

  • Quick update, I installed a Debian (.deb) 32bit version of dropbox and it says it installed sucessfully, however I dont know what to do next as I cant find the app in the app page.....

Any help and guidance would be great! :)
  • Did they give an ARM version? If the .deb is x86, it won't work on the NAS.

I think it is mostly python based, so should be a neutral version out there.
  • I believe there is no ARM version but they offer sources (https://www.dropbox.com/install?os=lnx). If their sources are arch-independant (which I don't know) they could be compiled.
What I'm actually thinking is simpler than than. Netgear has a client right ? Could we reconfigure it to allow bi-dir sync to a folder that we would share later on ? If it's able to send, it should be able to read, at least to know what's on the cloud already.
Problem is to know how to reconfigure, and I'm not qualified for that (used to debian, but not to Netgear's OS).
  • NETGEAR's client is a custom binary, only designed for one-way sync. They would need to add better code to it.

I once poked at the 'strings' in the binary, to try other command line options on it, then they got all nuts and stripped them all. Saying I was looking at confidential info: viewtopic.php?p=393410#p393410
  • What a trust in someone they know...
It's time they learn they have two ways to go. One is to let people do what they want and to give them what they need to (debian way). The other way is to give a product which is awesome by itself and doesn't need to be improved that much (Apple way). Their OS is more than perfectible. A cloud enabled device with no firewall ? No folder level permissions/backup ? No way to see CPU/RAM ? there are easy fix for that but wait... We are not allowed to activate SSH if we want support later on ? Something clearly wrong there.
  • Hi guys,

Didnt get anywhere with dropbox in the end so decided to give owncloud a try, I have installed it on my readynas and it is visible on my network however does anyone know how find out the web address so I can access it over the internet? all i can find is the internal IP (I.e 192.168 etc).

    Thanks!
  • several ways to find out.
The first one is to log on your router and check for internet address.
The second one is to type "my ip" in google you should find it.
However you public IP may change depending on your provider, so you may want to find a dynamic DNS provider.

You may also have to do some port forwarding and firewall rules on your router. at least if it's like a normal server service.
