Duo v1 - Recover data from a spanned volume

Hi all,

I did find this post here that said I'm screwed (and it's my own fault too!), but figured I'd just put up a post just-in-case...

Situation:
Duo v1, 2 x 1TB drives configured as a span (I believe it was RAID 0). Second disk has failed (which is the newer one too) - Frontview was reporting reallocated sectors in the days leading up to it.
Important data was recently backed up (I also did a backup when I came to the realisation that the **** was going to hit the fan soon), but I would like to recover the unimportant data from the drive if I can. Hence I am here.

Self-help:
I have used DiskInternals Linux Reader to access the drives with some success (although I am not overly familiar with its operation, and it's own help is pretty empty) and as is typical to these situations I'm probably being overly specific in what I'm looking for so my typical search locations (including Google) aren't being overly helpful (I did find some info but not all the answers I'm looking for).

What I got from DiskInternals is the following:

  • Disk1:

    • Hard Disk Drives:

      • Linux Ext Volume 1 (1.95 GB) - is accessible and appears to contain RAIDiator and associated files

      • Volume 1 (512 MB) - attempting to access gives the error message "Can't open disk: Volume 1, Check the disk and try again"

      • Volume 2 (929.05 GB) - attempting to access gives the error message "Can't open disk: Volume 2, Check the disk and try again"

    • Physical Drives:

      • ST31000528AS - the physical drive: attempting to access gives the error message "Can't open disk: ST31000528AS, Check the disk and try again"

  • Disk 2:

    • Hard Disk Drives:

      • Linux Ext Volume 1 (1.95 GB) - is accessible and appears to contain RAIDiator and associated files

      • Volume 1 (512 MB) - attempting to access gives the error message "Can't open disk: Volume 1, Check the disk and try again"

      • Unallocated space - Lvm_LVM, at end (929.05Gb) - I'm guessing (since my usage was about 52%) that this is the unused space of the span, and the above 512 MB was the used space.

    • Physical Drives:

      • ST31000528AS - the physical drive: attempting to access gives the error message "Can't open disk: ST31000528AS, Check the disk and try again"

    • Containers

      • Lvm_LVM (929.05 GB) - I'm guessing this has data relating to the span? Likewise attempting to access gives the error message "Can't open disk: Lvm_LVM, Check the disk and try again"

From of the above, I'm getting the impression that if I connect both drives it may be able to rebuild the span and make my data accessible, I don't know... but I will attempt when I get my hands on another caddy.

I'm currently using a demo of R-Studio to scan the drive and see if it can find any recoverable info.

Note for readers: always RAID (>0) your drives: disks fail. (this is actually the second time I've had a disk failure in my ReadyNAS - the drive that failed this time is actually the replacement for the one that failed the first time... and yes, I didn't learn after the first time.)

Hope you can get some data back, but spanned RAID-0 is horrible when it comes to data recovery.

If you get lots of errors reading disk 2 you might have to try cloning it.

If you must use RAID-0 a separate volume for each disk is the way to go.

Whatever RAID level you use backups are important.
  • 20/20 hindsight as they say, but then again I already knew all that but I suppose I had the whole "it won't happen to me" thing going on, especially with the system being new-ish, althouh - as I again already know - that's usually the time things go wrong.

R-Studio seems to be picking up files - was worried when it started as it kept having cyclic redundancy check errors. 5% down on my first scan... plenty more to go.
