Duo v1 will not boot - No Disk Detected

Hi, there is definitely a serial console, it's that slot on the back of the unit covered with sticky tape.
I've used it on the Pro2, a Duo v2 and an old Duo before, though it's possible I may have the wrong settings for speed/flow control. I'd usually see some crap on the screen when I get these wrong but I dont get anything.
I'll pm chirpa as suggested. it's not looking too bright at the moment, the chap says he might have shredded the old documents as he certainly cant find them.
Does the light sequence I described have any other meanings apart from "No disk detected"? perhaps like "give up it's really broken!"
