NASNoob, yes we may use the ReadyNAS differently, as I use my primary NAS as a small home server with virtually all of my data on the NAS. I went to this after looking for a solution of trying to find out which of three PC's a particular file was on. Knowing there was a better way I researched various solutions and bought my NV+ 5 years ago before Infrant was purchased by Netgear. Unlike many of the other home/small office solutions out there, you did not have to install a special program on the PC to access the data on the NAS, and there was no 'key' disk which held the OS, which meant that if you lost the primary drive, you still have major problems trying to recover. Nor did I think any of the the prevalent 1 drive NAS units was a real solution. Of course in those days, if you wanted a desktop ReadyNAS, there was only one, the only decision you had to make was how many drives you would buy with it.
Over the years I have managed to upgrade my original NV+ to an NVX and add a second NVX whose only purpose is to back up the primary every evening. The NV+ was rehomed to a very good friend and still going strong.
The alerts are a tool just as any other. If I get an alert, I usually see it on the LCD panel first and then either in my e-mail or RAIDiator. But this is because the PC I use the most is sitting near the NAS units, but there have been a few times when I got an alert on my laptop and came into the room where the NAS units are to check it out. If you have a remote unit, you are totally dependent on the alerts.
