Is there a bug in the front view software?

There are so many threads with people being unable to get the test connection to work and just being left wih error connecting to. Its obviously not just me.

Can we have some guidance please.

I've selected
remote windows/ nas tiemstamp
host = name of the computer with no slashes or anything like that
path = d as I want to back upthe entire d: drive

Try switching the protocol to archive bit and run the backup job. Please post the log if it fails then.
  • I don't think you can connect to windows 7 starter, its limited in many different ways.

Windows 7 has an extra layer that is controlled by the network location type. When you select Home as the network location, it creates a secure workgroup called a HomeGroup. This is not compatible with any previous version of Windows. (Other anything else for that matter) This actually locks down the network so that only members of the HomeGroup can see or talk to each other.
My setup worked by selecting Work location type, ensured the Workgroup was correct. Enabled Network Discovery and File and Printer Sharing.

since you can not choose workgroup in starter, I think you are pretty much S.O.L.

    edit:
also windows live id sign in assistant has been known to cause problems with samba, preventing linux clients from connecting to windows servers.
  • So, I'd just posted a similar issue, then, thought about the solution and it works for me. You have to actually create a share on your Windows machine in order for Frontview to use it properly (at least in my case) rather than using a drive letter.

In Windows, create the shared folder. In Frontview, enter your host then for the path enter: "myshare/myfolder". Once I did that, it connected and would allow backups. If you're using a drive letter, it's going to fail because it's not using enough "/" before the host. If you enter one manually and test, it will work but once you click "Apply" Frontview will automatically drop the extra "/" causing it to fail again.

    BTW, I'm on Windows 7 x64 with a ReadyNAS NV+
  • The issues are now being discussed here. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=48509

I'm on 7 Ultimate, so Starter isn't a concern. Don't use Live.id, so again not an issue.

As to shares, yes, everything is set up as a share.

As explained in the thread posted, I'm only having issues with one particular PC, all the others are working as they should be.
  • sign on assistant is bundled as part of windows live essentials (windows live writer, family safety, movie maker, photo gallery, etc), if you installed any of type of windows live app you may have sign on assistant installed and not know it.

just making a point that while you may not have it, its possible for someone else to have it and not know it

Thanks. I've just checked again and on the problem PC I only have Windows Movie Maker and Photo Gallery installed. But on the laptop which does work ok, I seems I do have the two progs above, plus Messenger, Writer and Mesh, which it seems wifey let her niece install when she was here for the weekend. Words were exchanged! Lol

Still doesn't explain the issues though, does it? As it's the working unit which has that crap installed, not the problematic desktop.
  • I had Live Movie Maker and Live Photo Gallery installed only from the Live Essentials. I also had some Microsoft Games software that came with Microsoft Flight that I uninstalled, and suddenly everything worked perfectly. Not sure which one was blocking for Frontview though.

So thank you very much for your help on this forum.

    Windows 7 64bit Home Premium.
