Every day bad performance after or during upgrade of the antivirus definitions

I have an Ultra 6 running OS 6.10.4. A couple of months ago I turned the AV function on. I am not sure since when this is occurring, but every day during or after updating the AV definitions, the machine becomes so slow it is unusable. Even getting it to reboot is taking a very long time, but after rebooting the performance is fine.

I've looked at the / a log but t he only thing I can find there is a reference to the AV Virus file defs being updated.

I'll try to turn the AV off as soon as I can get to the Service pages..........

I'm able to access the web frontend now:

Systeem: Definitiebestand van antivirusscanner is bijgewerkt naar 59.26074.

This is dutch for upgrade of AC definitions has taken place.

I have  just turned the AV off.

Performance is now normal, but that is what also happen when the installation ogf the AV defininitions is completed. However, this is not something that goes very fast.

I also have an RN426 which I bought as a replacement for the Ultra 6. That does not seem to have the problems, but its drives are faster and there is hardly anything running ore stored on it. I'm still puzzling how to migrate Owncloud from one machine to the other.

  • I wonder if the AV deamon is hogging the NAS resources. When update happens, could you try and monitor the CPU and Memory usage? You can use SSH to access the command line interface and run top and free -h while this slowness is going on.

How much memory is installed?  If it's not at least 2GB, I recommend you upgrade since all native Intel OS6 units ship with at least that much.  Of course, it also could be the CPU, as rn_enthusiast said.  The Ultra6 also has a lesser CPU than native OS6 units and, unfortunately, cannot be upgraded.
