Exapnsion question on Pro Business
Hi all
I currently have 5 disks out of 6 used in a mix of 2tb and 3tb with dual redundancy. I want to replace all of the 2tb drives with 3tb drives and add the 6th drive as 3tb. I know there is the 16tb limit but does that apply to the size of the usable partition or to the total disk count? I assume it is the volume size and that for my setup with 6 x 3tb the filesystem would only be 12tb and no problem and I could even use 4tb if I wanted . Also would it be better to bring the NAS down and remove the drive I want to replace and then boot with the new drive in its place? Thanks for the help.

- The 16 TiB limit applies to the volume size, so you are correct in thinking that with 6x3TB and 6x4 Raid-6 you'd be ok.
There is also an 8 TiB growth limit - expansion cannot go beyond X+ 8TiB, where X was the initial volume size (last factory reset or original installation). So for instance, if you installed a single 2 TB drive initially, you couldn't expand beyond 10.
Hot-swapping is better, as then the NAS explicitly sees the disk removal and the disk insertion events. Though if the disk is unformatted, power down and replace should also work.
Your data is more vulnerable than usual during expansion, so I suggest making sure your backups are up to date before you begin.
