expanding readynas NV+ horizontaly

I'm looking to expand my readynas.

It currently configured as X-Raid with 2 disks, both 1TB drives.

I have a 3rd 1TB drive I would like to add.

I understand the system adds the drive and does a sync.  Do I have to prepare the new drive before adding it?  Does it need to be wiped/formatted?

Correct.  It will be synced to the array, which will then be converted from 2x1TB RAID-1 to 3x1TB RAID-5.  Your volume size will double.

During the processing, the performance will be slower than usual.

No.  With your NAS you can just hot-insert it.

      Much appreciated.

So the data on this drive will not interfere with the current raid, it will be just be assumed and overwritten.

      Thanks
