Failed Windows Image backup to ReadyNAS 104 6.9.5
Hello all,
I'm using a NetGear ReadyNAS RN104 at firmware level 6.9.5.
Today I tried to run a full backup of my new Windows 10 laptop. The initial backup includes an image mode backup, too.

There's a guide here that might help: https://kb.netgear.com/24913/How-do-I-back-up-my-Windows-PC-to-a-ReadyNAS-OS-6-system-using-Windows-Backup-and-Restore

Mar 05, 2019Hi HolgerGT86, I cannot help you to understand your windows/home folder issue.
Instead of wrestling with that, why not creating a dedicated share called "Backup_MachineName", which should only be accessable by admin and your concerned user account. Then use this share as the target for your backup.
Kind regards

Hello StephenB,
I was following the referenced knowledge base document. The backup is still running, but it's looking good so far. Nevertheless, I already have a comment to the referenced document. I'm missing details about the share settings "File Access" tab. I'm not an expert on access authorization and because of this I would find it helpful if the document would include details if I need to take care about the "File Access" settings at all, and if so, which settings to apply. Many thanks for now!
Holger

The Windows backup completed successfully. Nevertheless, it would be interesting to understand why it fails using the user's home share.
Many thanks!

I don't work for Netgear, and don't have the ability to edit KB articles. Perhaps post this as an idea in the idea exchange? Marc_V and/or JohnCM_S might also be able to escalate your request.
The NAS (like Windows) intersects file permissions and network permissions - giving you the most restrictive interpretation of the combination. For example, if you have "read" access at the network level, but "read/write" access at the file level, you will end up with only read access. Similarly if you have "read/write" access at the network level, but "read" access at the file level, you still will end up with only "read" access.
Although this intersection is symmetric, it is easier to enforce access controls using the "network access" settings, and leave the "file access" set to allow access for everyone. One reason using "file access" is challenging is that users can change file access settings (at least for files that user owns). For example, with Windows you can right-click on a file or folder, and change the file permissions. But users can't change the network access - that is set exclusively in the NAS.
