Files Created via FTP not accessible to other users

Hi,

I can successfully upload pictures from my Android phone via ReadyNas Remote (which uses FTP). I can view the pictures once uploaded via several different windows XP/Windows 7 computers that are directly connected to the NAS, however, other users logging in to their accounts from the same computers cannot view the pictures. I can get the other users access by going into the CIFS permissions, Advanced Options tab, and applying the "Set ownership and permission for existing files and folders in this share to the above settings..." but this is a pain.

This appears to be an issue in my understanding of the file privileges applied by the FTP protocol when creating a file - only the "creating" user seems to have access.

Any help would be greatly appreciated in allowing other access to the files once uploaded. The FTP permissions don't have the same options as CIFS to "Automatically set permissions on new files and folders."

Tom

  • To open the file permission for NEW files, follow the steps below:

    Configuring Advance CIFS Permissions:
    1. Go to Share listings
    2. Click Cifs icon of the specific share name
    3. Scroll down and put a check on "Automatically set permissions on new files and folders" under Advance CIFS Permissions.

To open the file permission for EXSISTING files, follow the steps below:

    Configuring Advance Options:
    1. Go to Share listings
    2. Click Cifs icon of the specific share name
    3. Go to Advance Options tab
    4. Share folder owner: (type the share name)
    5. Share folder group: (nogroup)
    6. Put a check on "Set ownership and permission for existing files and folders in this share to the above settings" and click Apply.

    P.S.
After you put a click on the Apply button the check will disappear inside the check box, it's normal because it's an action box.

On the x86 firmware the FTP/S tab has its own "Automatically set permissions on new files and folders" checkbox. Regrettably the Sparc firmware does not. You might submit a feature request.
  • Thank you both arjoseph and StephenB for your replies. arjoseph, I tried all the steps you suggested multiple times, and was able to fix the existifng files, but each new upload would be unaccesible.

After I posted, I realized the same thing was happening not only to FTP'd to files but also to any other files I copied through normal Windows Explorer copies - they remained visable, but not accessible to read-only users. This was with the "Automatically set permissions on new files and folders" under Advance CIFS Permissions. I was banging my head over and over (hours) with every possible combinations of settings on the CIFS settings page, reboots, without resolution.

    RESOLVED:

I created a new share, and moved everything over to the new share - which was quite a pain because there was about 500GB of data. The new share works fine with both CIFS and FTP. Still don't know the root cause as to why the original 'media' share that I had been using for a couple of years became unusable.

    Thanks,
    Tom
