Files on ReadyNAS read only after saving

You're running 4.2.5 not 4.2.15? 4.2.5 (http://www.readynas.com/RAIDiator_x86_4_2_5_Notes) is incredibly old firmware that was released months before Windows 7. It's high likely that 4.2.5 is not fully compatible with Windows 7 and that you should update the firmware on your ReadyNAS. If you haven't already got one I would suggest doing a backup of the data stored on the ReadyNAS first.

Much has changed in the ReadyNAS firmware over the past couple of years and it's quite possible a firmware update has addressed your issue. You can read through the various release notes e.g. http://www.readynas.com/RAIDiator_x86_4_2_7_Notes, http://www.readynas.com/RAIDiator_x86_4_2_8_Notes etc. or compare the GPL (open-source code used by the ReadyNAS, there's a lot of private code that's obviously not in the GPL) if you're after some more technical info as to what's been updated and you're familiar with what packages are used on Linux:

You can see there's been updates to things like ACL (used for setting permissions on files) and samba (used for windows file sharing). Samba version 3.0.34 in 4.2.5. Samba 3.5.8 is in 4.2.17. I just did a google search and from a quick glance it appears Windows 7 could well have issues with such an old samba version being used as is in 4.2.5.

What version of Office are you running? If using Office 2007 and WebDAV Did you look at the link chirpa gave (now has a new location): http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/share/why_are_files_read-only_when_using_webdav_on_vista_with_office_2007

Thank you for your support! Updating the firmware did the trick. The user who has reported the issue is now able to open a document, save it and re-open it without getting to the readonly mode.

I unfortunately encounter the exact same issue on my NAS but the model is a ReadyNas NV+ and the current sofware running is 4.1.7 version.
But it does not only happen on W7-64 bits computers. I have this issue with my computer running Vista-32.

Would the bug be only fixed on the RAIDiator_x86 products ?

In order to reinitiate the permissions to read/only files, I am forced to re-init the permissions to the root directory and to propagate them to all subdirectories. By doing this, the blocking users are cleared until they save the file again.

I am refreshing my request since I got no answer to it.

I am running ReadyNas NV+ with latest 4.1.7 sw.

Let me please recall the previous fine description : "Each time a user with Vista 32bits opens an office file, edits and saves it afterwards, the file becomes read only for this specific user. We're working with Active Directory and Group permissions. But after saving the office file, the user is explicitly listed in the security rights with read only permission."

It's particularly annoying.

You might need to use the Advanced CIFS Permissions settings to set less restrictive default file permissions.

Unfortunately, I have set all CIFS permissions to read/write for groups and users on files and folders. So, I cannot see how this would restrict my administrator's right to save a file more than once ?

By the way, I just upgraded last week-end to 4.1.8 with no success to solve this issue !

You did this in the Advanced CIFS Permissions area of the CIFS tab for the share?

Having the exact same issue. Windows 7 (both 32-bit and 64-bit) clients save a file to a share governed by Active Directory ACL and the file becomes read-only such that they can no longer directly save the file while editing. What they can do is to save the file to their desktop and then copy it over the existing file in the NAS share. When they do this they do not receive an error message about the file being read-only. Problem can be duplicated. Windows XP users do not see this problem.
