Fixing read/write speeds (older device but updated to latest OS)
So, I've had this device for some years now and it's done me really well, but recently things have really just slowed up. I've installed the latest OS updates and have plenty of space on drives etc. ...

Just linux, Ubuntu + Arch. I have windows VMs on my poweredge R630 but that defeats the point slightly i think.
Apart from knowing it transfers slower in myself, i've since read some threads where people mention that shares/volumes created long ago won't perform as well as newly created ones due to some firmware changes. So i really want to make sure that i'm getting the best out of the device/network.
If that means a huge backup process and wiping of drives/device then i would like to get it done, but i would like to prove that it is in fact slower than it should be first if you understand :)

You could mount an smb share on the linux machine, and then test speeds. I think dd can do that (never tried it with a mounted drive on the network), as well as some other tools. Some suggestions are here: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/3575/display-transfer-speed-when-performing-cp-from-the-command-line
