You are using the wrong procedure.

If you are running 4.1.x firmware, then you have a v1 platform. The default factory settings are admin / netgear1. The OS reinstall procedure is on pgs 23-24 in the manual here: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/RND2110/Duov1_NV+v1_HW_en_06Dec11.pdf

If you are running 5.x.x firmware, then you have a v2 platform. The default factory settings are admin / password. The OS reinstall procedure for v2 is on page 24-25 here: http://www.readynas.com/download/documentation/HM/ReadyNAS_Duov2_NV+v2_HW_en_19-Sept-11.pdf

Good point.

Pressing and holding the POWER button for about 5 seconds (first blink of disk LEDs) on the v1 would result in skipping the volume check.

  On power up it skips the check. If the NAS was already powered up (and it sounds like it was) it just forcibly powers down.
  
  Either way it won't do an OS reinstall...

    As a follow-up, you may need to check if your RND4000 (also known as ReadyNAS NV+) is a version 1 or version 2. Check this article below as reference guide:

    After you have determined whether your RND4000 is a version 1 or version 2, access this article below to click on the appropriate ReadyNAS model you have for a detailed guide on the boot menu options:
    
    ReadyNAS & ReadyDATA: Boot Menu
    
    Be sure to perform OS reinstall. Doing OS reinstall will not delete the data stored in your NAS. It will just reset the username and password to its default credentials. Be reminded that if you choose factory default in the boot menu options then that will wipe out all data stored in your NAS.
