This exact thing just happened to me. I was transferring some files off of my camcorder overnight to the NAS. I woke up this morning and the file transfer stopped and there was no data in my media folder. I changed nothing on the NAS (Readynas Pioneer Pro), all I was doing was transferring files.
Thanks to this thread I was able to fix it. I just renamed media to media1 and all my data was in media1. I am leaving for vacation tomorrow so I don't have time to fix it right now, but I am glad I can see my data again.
