GlobalSan iSCSI 4.1 Support?
I'm trying to understand why Netgear is not working more closely with SNS to resolve the issues with the new 4.X initiator they've released that is 64-bit on Snow Leopard. This would seem to be the way to go but I get no sense that either company is talking to the other for the benefit of their mutual customers. Is this happening?
At some point the v3 legacy solution is going to break and then what? I think many ReadyNAS customers with Macs would gladly pay $20-$50 for a supported initiator that is tested and works with Netgear's products. I can't help feel like this is falling through the gap and it creates a big hole in the Netgear Mac story. How about Netgear offer to sell a supported version for SNS so that both companies can see a reason to get the kinks worked out?
Just a suggestion.

- Just an quit update, I am waiting for SNS respond as I had sent the logs and tcpdump. Hopefully, they find something to fix in their driver and mac kernel.
- mrwigglesAspirantJedi,
That's great news. I am hopeful that a support connection between Netgear and SNS will result in a solid iSCSI solution for Mac users soon. Please keep us posted!
Yesterday I had v3 of GlobalSAN lock up on me during my daily reconnect process. I can't get v3 to maintain persistence, so I have to manually connect to my iSCSI volumes every time I reboot. This whole issue makes me very nervous about storing critical data on my iSCSI volumes.
-m - nightstrmAspirantLooks like GlobalSAN is starting a certification program for 3rd parties wishing to ensure compatibility with their software. Hopefully someone from Netgear can/will make contact following the procedure in the program announcement thread on their forums.

This would be an excellent step forward for those of us who have found iSCSI to be an excellent way to connect our Macs to our ReadyNAS products! - mrwigglesAspirant

That's great news from SNS. Can someone from Netgear comment on whether you guys plan to get involved in this program?
-mw - I had email them personally before using personal email. but I haven't heard anything regarding about any of the bug fixes or update from SNS.
I had also gave this info to appropriate personnel at NETGEAR to see if we can get something going on with them.
Thanks for the post. - mrwigglesAspirantJedi,
Do the Netgear guys have any updates on where we are with SNS/Netgear certifying the 4.1 release with the ReadyNAS? It's been over a month since the last post on this subject and I MUST STILL MANUALLY connect to my Pro Business to mount iSCSI volumes, etc. etc.
I'm pretty mystified as to why there is no solution forthcoming from both companies. It would be fantastic customer support for Netgear to actually close the loop on this issue and give it's mac customers so sense that iSCSI is not an afterthought.
Still frustrated, but also hopeful,
-Michael - nfarringAspirantI installed the GlobalSAN iSCSI initiator 4.1 beta on Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.6 64-bit. I was able to open a 500GB iSCSI drive on the ReadyNAS Pro Business Edition. Then I copied over about 20GB of data. Then the connection was idle. Then the connection died. It died in such a way that I cannot either connect or disconnect using the GlobalSAN interface in the System Preferences panel. It looks like I need to reboot to access the iSCSI disk.
It would seem that the $200 ATTO iSCSI initiator is the only solution for Mac OS X Snow Leopard 64-bit at the moment.
I did a performance test using dd: dd if=/dev/zero of=data bs=4096 count=1000000
ReadyNAS Pro Business Edition w/ 6 consumer-grade 1.5TB HDDs.
1GB connection via dumb switch with Jumbo frames disabled.

- sphardy1ApprenticeI took the plunge with the production release on my iMac (now running 64 bit kernel, so needed updated iSCSI drivers). Pleased to say it appears to be working just fine with my Aperture Vault.
Note, I am not using authentication on the volumes and I did have to set the iSCSI option "Always send Session Type when connecting". Other than figuring that - volumes mounted without issue. Tests are against my Ultra-4 (4.2.15) and the NV+ (4.1.7) running WhoCares? iSCSI addon
I'll report back if I get any issues after further testing - nightstrmAspirantI upgraded to 4.1 a few weeks ago now and have not had any problems with my iTunes or Aperture libraries stored on two separate targets once I enabled the "Always send Session Type when connecting" option.
