HandyBackup 7.4 & ReadyNAS OS 6.1

I have a ReadyNAS 316 w/ Firmware 6.1.2 at a remote site. I am trying to backup to it using HandyBackup 7.4.2 Network Server. I have had no shortage of problems and would appreciate any help.

First problem was that OS 6.1 only supports implicit FTPS, while HandyBackup only supports explicit FTPS and SFTP. As a result, I was forced to use FTP, which was working. HandyBackup recently started refusing to connect via FTP, though I can connect w/ Windows' command prompt FTP on the same computer. I found this in the HandyBackup log files:

VERBOSE:>15:47:18 About to connect() to [FTP ip] port 21 (#0)
VERBOSE:>15:47:18 Trying [FTP ip]...
VERBOSE:>15:47:18 connected
VERBOSE:>15:47:18 220 ProFTPD 1.3.4c Server (NETGEAR ReadyNAS) [FTP ip]
VERBOSE:>15:47:18 USER SQL2
VERBOSE:>15:47:18 331 Password required for SQL2
VERBOSE:>15:47:18 PASS ********
VERBOSE:>15:47:18 230 User SQL2 logged in
VERBOSE:>15:47:18 PWD
VERBOSE:>15:47:18 257 "/home/SQL2" is the current directory
VERBOSE:>15:47:18 Entry path is '/home/SQL2'
VERBOSE:>15:47:18 PASV
VERBOSE:>15:47:48 server response timeout
VERBOSE:>15:47:48 Closing connection #0
VERBOSE:>15:47:48 Timeout was reached

OS 6.1 and HandyBackup both claim to support WebDAV, but neither has any documentation for it. What ports it uses, etc?

I'd like to be able to connect the NAS to the main company network with a VPN, but there don't seem to be any VPN clients for OS 6. There's a VPN Server App, but I've been unable to get SoftEther's Site-to-Site IPsec to connect to pfSense 2.0.2, which is what our main location uses for firewall and VPN.

Any suggestions and/or help would be greatly appreciated.

This was working before? Also did you try PASV from the windows command prompt?

With the PASV mode, you need to make sure you have a relatively small range of passive ports configured on the RN316, and that they are all forwarded in your router to the RN316. Is that the case?
  • It was working. There were internet connection problems at the remote location. A Comcast tech came out, did some work, put in a new router/modem combo. I setup NAT on the new router to forward the same ports as the old router was forwarding: 443 (HTTPS), 21 (FTP), and 55000-55100 (FTP passive ports). I can remotely connect to the NAS' web management interface through HTTPS.

When I connect from the Windows Server 2003R2 SP2 command prompt I get:
    C:\>FTP [NAS IP]
    Connected to [NAS IP].
220 ProFTPD 1.3.4c Server (NETGEAR ReadyNAS) [NAS IP]
    User ([NAS IP]:(none)): SQL2
    331 Password required for SQL2
    Password:
    230 User SQL2 logged in
    ftp> dir
    200 PORT command successful
150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for file list
    drwxrwxrwx 1 guest guest 270 Aug 26 13:29 Backup
    226 Transfer complete
    ftp: 63 bytes received in 0.00Seconds 63000.00Kbytes/sec.
    ftp>

When I try from my Windows 7 Pro x64 SP1 desktop I get:
    C:\>ftp [NAS IP]
    Connected to [NAS IP].
220 ProFTPD 1.3.4c Server (NETGEAR ReadyNAS) [NAS IP]
    User ([NAS IP]:(none)): SQL2
    331 Password required for SQL2
    Password:
    230 User SQL2 logged in
    ftp> dir
500 PORT/EPRT (Active Mode/Extended Active Mode) is not supported. Use PASV/EPSV
    instead of this
425 Unable to build data connection: Invalid argument
    ftp> PASV
    Invalid command.
    ftp>

FileZilla works fine from my desktop.

I guess the windows FTP is pretty limited. I use FileZilla myself.

If FileZilla is connecting (and Windows Server 2003R2 SP2) then I don't think there is any problem with port forwarding.

Is port masquerading turned on? Though that seems a long shot, since this was working before.
  • In the FTP settings on the ReadyNAS, Masquerading is enabled, and the masquerade address is set to the DDNS hostname I use for HTTPS & FTP connections.

    This is from FileZilla:

I'm so frustrated w/HandyBackup and this ReadyNAS.
HandyBackup doesn't do implicit FTPS. OS 6.1 doesn't do explicit FTPS or SFTP. OS 6.1 doesn't have a VPN client. Neither HandyBackup nor OS 6.1 have any documentation for their WebDAV support. Comcast had to have a combo modem/router, couldn't just provide a modem with their Extreme 105 service (which doesn't get anywhere near 105Mbps).

The combination does seem painful. Though you got the implicit/explicit story backwards.

HandyBackup seems to be working on Rsync, so maybe that will eventually help. Would a VPN router pair be a possibility?
  • I bought a Cisco Small Business RV220W VPN router right before Comcast replaced our modem with a modem/router combo since there are walkthroughs on configuring pfSense IPsec to work with Cisco equipment. I don't really want to put the RV220W behind the Comcast router if I have a choice.

So there are 2 options for tomorrow: try Poussin's vpnclient_1.1.6_all.deb and see if Comcast has a non-combo modem compatible with their Extreme 105 speed so I can plug the modem directly into the RV220W.

    Thanks for the help.

The other annoying thing about HandyBackup is I'm on the US east coast, they're GMT+6, EST +11, so I'll hopefully have their reply to my support e-mail tomorrow morning.
  • Woohoo. Finally got an ipSec VPN setup between my pfSense firewall/router at our main location and the new Cisco RV220W at the remote location. Hopefully the rest is relatively smooth sailing.
