Hard Drve Failure

I got an email notification this morning saying

"Disk test failed on disk in channel 2, model WDC_WD4000F9YZ-09N20L0, serial WD-WMC1F1268766."

But NETGEAR RAIDar diagnostics shows the drive is healthy

  • I have already replaced drive 2 with a spare 4TB and all is back to normal, if another drive fails I think it's best I look for a different drive and will replace the next failed 4TB drive with either a 6TB or 8TB drive.

I don't know where I would backup 6TB of data too? one at a time every week should do it and I'll bite the bullet and go for 8TB drives, model Seagate ST8000VN0002 US$550 each with a 5yr warranty.

      Hi claytonb,

Before pulling out and replacing the said drive with a new one, you may also want to take a look at your system device logs to check the health of the drive with the corresponding S/N (serial number).

      Kind regards,

I tried running Lifeguard but was going to take 952 hours to complete and was stuck at a certian sector count, so I ran Hard Drive Sentinel and it reported

There are 19 weak sectors found on the disk surface. They may be remapped any time in the later use of the disk.
At this point, warranty replacement of the disk is not yet possible, only if the health drops further.
It is recommended to examine the log of the disk regularly. All new problems found will be logged there.
              No actions needed.
