Good evening,
i've been looking at the tech specs on my rn104 and it shows it will take up-to 16th maximum.
are these limits set by software, the physical limitations of the hardware or just the maximum size drives tested at the time?

- It is a hardware limitation. You cannot create volumes larger than 16TB. You can create multiple volumes with each volume less than 16TB.
