Hardware Errors on Mirrored 750GB Seagate Disk on NV+(4.1.6)

Can you update the firmware on an NV+ without a disk in place?
Should I remove the failed disk, then update the firmware, as I think the backup will fail in any case, as this PST file appears to be the problem - I was just trying to copy it off the file server and it again locked up the NV+.
Is it because Disk 2 is the one that is failing?
Should I remove Disk 2 and try copying that particular PST file to see if a problem occurs?
Any ideas on which disk is being accessed on the NV+ if they are redundant?
