Help Request: NAS Hangs During Backup
I'm having an ongoing issue with a RN102 that hangs when backing up. Recovery requires powering down (i.e. turning it off) and restarting the NAS.
I recently bought a new ReadyNAS102 (firmware: 6.1.4 with 2 new 3TB) that sits on the same network as a ReadyNAS Duo V2 (firmware: RAIDiator 4.1.12 with 2x2TB). I'm trying to backup data weekly from the new RN102 to the older RNDuoV2. Three backup jobs have been setup and connections checked in the RN102. These connections work because I can see new file transfers from the RN102 to the RNDuoV2 before the RN102 hangs. I've tried backups to an E-SATA drive from the RN102 with the same result; RN102 hangs. When it does, all connections to the RN102 are lost from windows machines, there is no access to the OS6 interface and the Backup LED on the NAS blinks. There is no apparent issue with the RNDuoV2.
Has anyone else come across this instability issue? Any fault finding suggestions welcome before I succumb to the growing frustration and launch the thing out the window....

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI am not seeing that with mine, though I am backing up in the other direction (pro->rn102).
What backup protocol are you using?
Also, does it hang if you run the backup job on the duo v2 ("pulling" the data from the RN102). - fifthraceAspirantI have the exact same issue with my RN102.
Any time I do a backup either timestamp over smb or even to locally attached drives eventually the NAS hangs as you've described. I have even noticed this behaviour when I copy large amounts of files to a usb hard drive using the web interface.
Interestingly Rsync backup to locally attached drives doesn't cause this issue (even when transferring large amounts).
I have found that if I let the backup job finish everything returns to normal and I don't have to restart the NAS. Hence it seems as though rather than fully freezing the NAS the backup jobs are just taking up too much system resources. Although I would have thought an Rsync job would have used more than a straight file copy!
I currently have a support ticket open and have provided them with my system logs (twice) however they have not been able to determine a cause. - aquafrogstuffAspirantThanks for the comments.
I've backed up near 2TB data from the RNDuoV2 to RN102 before without issue. The RNDuoV2 has been a very reliable NAS.
I'll trial leaving the RN102 running for a few days with the current backup schedule to see if it recovers but for the amount of data being backed up, it shouldn't take as long as it is, that's why I believe it just hangs. Periodic checks of folder sizes on the destination drive (RNDuoV2) indicate no change in folder size which indicates to be nothing is being copied/backed up. - fifthraceAspirantIt's been almost a month since my support ticket was launched and it still hasn't been resolved.
I'm thinking I'll just return the unit. However I can't decide if I should buy the ReadyNAS 312 and hope the better CPU and additional RAM solve this problem or just go for a completely different brand.
Has anyone experienced this issue with a 312? - fifthraceAspirantAfter reading the following post I'm thinking it may be best to drop NetGear altogether.

- fifthraceAspirantHey aquafrogstuff did you end up finding a solution?
I gave up as after a month I couldn't even get support to acknowledge the issue. - Hi Guys,
I'm experiencing the same issue here with my newly bought ReadyNAS 102 with a 500GB e-Sata disk attached. As soon as the Backup job starts, or if you are trying to open the Shares tab, the device hangs and a power down is the only option to recover the NAS.
It's running 6.1.5 firmware and the e-Sata drive works flawlessly on my Windows Desktop.
Does anyone have a solution to this issue?
