Help swapping "dead" drive? [Case #15693780]
Hey all, I have an NV+ that is about 2 months old. I fired it up and loaded it with all of our data, backed up all files from PC's etc...it has 4 x 2TB WD Green Caviar drives at this point. All is well.
Last Friday drive #3 shows up dead via email alert, so I do an RMA with WD and order a second hot spare from newegg so I won't have to wait a week praying my data is safe next time around. Today I received the replacement and I am attempting to return the NAS to its happy XRAID status. I had powered off the drive last week after receiving this message instructing me to do so:
The X-RAID engine has failed to start. To ensure data integrity, please refrain from using the NAS and contact Support immediately. So here I am, new drive installed, awaiting some instruction.
Powering up the NAS with the brand spanking new 2TB WD Green Caviar in slot 3 now shows it as "not present" in RAIDar and in the admin pages. Not sure why this is happening, but could use some advice here.
When doing the last reboot, I chose: Perform volume scan on next boot. And the volume scan found no errors. However, the data volume is inaccessible and my shares are obviously missing as well.
I can't access the rescan option, it is greyed out. How can I add this guy? Hope I am missing something very basic here.
Thanks in advance,
Mike

- mjw3786AspirantMore fun! Just for kicks, I popped this drive back in the NV+ to see what might happen. NAS shows green across the board in RAIDar, with a new symptom on disk 3:
Standard health report when hovering over the green indicator PLUS this "; 16 ATA Errors"
And this on loading Frontview:
"ATA error count has increased in the last day. Disk 3: Previous count: 0 Current count: 16 Growing SMART errors indicate a disk that may fail soon. If the errors continue to increase, you should be prepared to replace the disk."
Still shows as not present in Frontview. Is this disk going to survive a possible clone attempt? I think I will shut down and leave it off until I have a chance to locate some replacements.
Thanks again for all the help everyone. Final question: am I wiser to ditch the WD disks altogether? I know Hitachi is a little more expensive, but those don't have these types of issues with ReadyNAS devices, do they? Sigh. - mjw3786AspirantUPDATE: Finally got some replacement disks from WD that are on the compatibility list. [WD20EARX]
Attempted to clone the disks from the old "bad" array disks with no success. Drives have since been formatted and we're starting fresh.
A couple of things:
1-We had long since absorbed the data loss. We had various piecemeal backups and most of the loss was Video that can be reacquired.
2-I have not started backing up our data to the NAS. I have "the fear" - fear that I will find myself in this same position after filling this guy up with data. What can I do here? Is there a way to "test" the NAS without loading it up with out personal data? How can I be sure it will not fail again? I'm less than confident this is a good backup solution, so I think we'll look in to getting a second NAS. Am I wise to do this with another ReadyNAS or am I facing the same issues down the road with this brand?
Any advice here is welcome. Money is not really an issue but i'd like to keep the continued costs for a second back unit at or around $1000, if possible. At that price point, is it smarter to go with a dedicated storage tower?

If you were to get another NAS I'd go with a newer model e.g. Ultra 4 (home) or Pro 4 (business model). Pro 4 has a 5 year warranty and business features. Note that you can't migrate disks from a NV+ to the Ultra/Pro. See http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_migrate_disks_over_from_an_existing_readynas_to_another - PapaBear1ApprenticeWhen you get an additional (new) unit, it is best to populate it with drives and use a Frontview backup job to transfer the data from the NV+ to the new unit. Then once you have all the data copies over, using the NFS feature, run it again using rsync to verify the backup. Once you have that done, make the newer faster unit your primary unit and make the NV+ your backup. My primary NAS is synchronized every night to my backup NAS using rsync. There is a certain comfort knowing that all your data has been backup up within the last 24 hours.
However, since both units are in my home, I periodically backup my critical/important data to a small USB drive which is then stored in my safe deposit box at the bank. That way if some disaster befalls my home and takes both units, the critical data is still safe.
