Hidden folder under AFP /media share

All,

I have a weird problem under my /media AFP and CIFS share there are several folders, one of them "TV Shows" is not visible under AFP but it is with CIFS and on SSH.

penguin-nas:/media# pwd
/media
penguin-nas:/media# ls -l
total 11336
drwxrwxrwx 4 nobody nogroup 4096 2013-03-04 23:00 BitTorrent
drwxrwxrwx 231 nobody nogroup 20480 2013-03-09 15:46 Blu-ray
drwxrwxrwx 4 nobody nogroup 4096 2013-02-17 22:05 Music
drwxrwxrwx 3 nobody nogroup 4096 2010-06-12 11:48 Network Trash Folder
drwxrwxrwx 5 nobody nogroup 36864 2013-03-09 17:08 SABnzbd
drwxrwxrwx 3 nobody nogroup 4096 2010-06-12 11:48 Temporary Items
drwxrwxrwx 29 nobody nogroup 4096 2013-01-24 20:21 TV Series

I tried disabling and re-enabling AFP and renaming the folder on Linux but no joy.

  • The most common cause of a file or folder being hidden would be if the name began with a fullstop however clearly in this case this does not apply.

There is however a commandline tool for hiding and unhiding files and folders called chflags, try doing the following

    1. Launch Terminal.app
    2. cd to the /media directory
    3. type chflags nohidden "TV Series"
  • This worked, although I had to run the command from the OS X terminal and as superuser.

    cd /Volumes/media
    sudo chflags nohidden TV\ Series/

    Thanks :)
