A bit more information...
We're using ReadyNAS OS 6.6.1, and most of the clients are old Macs, running 10.4 upwards.
We've not enabled AFP because we're reluctant to use a protocol which should be going the way of the dodo...
It would be interesting to see if AFP (presumably Netatalk?) performs any better though.

Hi johnb_pa,
Kindly try enabling AFP then observe. If it does the same thing, I suggest you call support. If its brand new, it should still be within the 90-day support.
