A bit more information...
We're using ReadyNAS OS 6.6.1, and most of the clients are old Macs, running 10.4 upwards.
We've not enabled AFP because we're reluctant to use a protocol which should be going the way of the dodo...
It would be interesting to see if AFP (presumably Netatalk?) performs any better though.

We've not had a chance to test AFP access yet, but will do.
Sadly what we've had back from the users is that the ReadyNAS is performing much worse than the 10 year old Windows server which the NAS is replacing. :(
