How can I tell if my ReadyNAS Pro Pioneer vol is expanding?
I have a Pro Pioneer which had 6 disks in it. 4x1TB and 2x2TB.
Over the weekend I got an alert that disk 1 was starting to fail, so I ordered a replacement disk.
The failing disk is 1TB and the replacement is 3TB.
After initially putting in the 3TB disk it successfully rebuilt the volume, once I figured out that I had to reboot to get it to start resyncing.
I was now protected, so that all seemed to go well enough.
Then I was waiting for it to expand using the 2nd TB on the new disk to match up with the 2nd TB on disks 5 and 6.
It even said it would expand using that space, but wasn't doing anything.
At that point I figured I had to reboot once again to get that process to start, after which is appeared to say it was expanding.
I left it overnight and when I checked it today nothing seems to have happened. Any mention of expansion is gone and it's operating as-if I still had 4x1 and 2x2.
Here is the main log file, with some annotations:
It appears to know about the extra disk space, but is not using it:
4657 GB (84%) of 5539 GB used
Configuration: RAID Level X-RAID2, 6 disks
Status: Redundant
RAID Disks:
Ch 1 : WDC WD30EFRX-68EUZN0 [2794 GB] 1858 GB allocated
Ch 2 : WDC WD1000FYPS-01ZKB1 [931 GB] 927 GB allocated
Ch 3 : WDC WD1000FYPS-01ZKB1 [931 GB] 927 GB allocated
Ch 4 : WDC WD1000FYPS-01ZKB1 [931 GB] 927 GB allocated
Ch 5 : WDC WD2003FYYS-02W0B0 [1863 GB] 1858 GB allocated
Ch 6 : WDC WD2003FYYS-02W0B0 [1863 GB] 1858 GB allocated
5539 is the same size as when I had 4x1 + 2x2. It makes sense for 927*5 + 931.
If it had expanded I would expect to see 927*5 + 2*931, or approximately 6497.
How do I get it to properly expand and use the extra space? Since I'm nearly full now and those 1TB drives are ~4.5 years old I decided to buy 3 more 3TB drives.
But I don't want to put them in until I've gotten disk1 to be properly used for that first expansion.
