How do I stop an automatic firmware update on boot for ReadyNAS 516?
I am presently running OS 6.6.1 on a ReadyNAS 516. I receive a message when I connect to the web portal that 6.8.1 has been downloaded to my ReadyNAS and will be installed (update my machine) on boo...

If you're comfortable with SSH you can remove the firmware update download from the backend# cat /etc/.flash_update
Will tell you where the downloaded firmware is. You could remove that file and remove /etc/.flash_update file
# rm /etc/.flash_update
This will stop the update from being installed on the next boot.
As Marty_M said we don't automatically update the firmware. There's always a popup that has to be agreed to before it's downloaded. I have several ReadyNAS including multiple 516 units and have always ahd to confirm I want to install an upgrade before downloading it.

It does appear you would like to verify if there is a setting to disable the automatic firmware update of NAS. There is no setting on the admin page to disable the automatic update, as for script or command to disable it through the backend we do not have that since support does not recommend accessing and changing the setting on the backend since that may or will may void the warranty of the device. If you are familiar with SSH/telnet access and linux command we can wait for any recommendations from community member that might gone through the same concern but it will be on your own risk.
As long as the NAS is connected to a network that has internet access it will try to automatically detect if there is a new firmware available however there is always pop up confirmation where it will ask to continue with the update or cancel it. If you do not wish to proceed with the update you could always cancel it.

Thank you for your feedback, but you are actually incorrect about my case. I am very familiar with the pop-up confirmation choice. I did not accept the update, it was automatically uploaded to my machine. I just started getting a message that as soon as I reboot I will get updated. Because I update the kernel, I also make the choice when I am ready for firmware updates. In fact, I was wondering if this was a new NetGear "feature" because of security updates. I don't appreciate this choice being taken away from me.

The automatic update is not a new feature of the latest firmware. The design of the NAS is to always ask confirmation if you want to proceed or cancel the upgrade. I would like to verify what part of the statement where mentioned
