Thanks, everyone. This is reassuring and the mdgm's tips will be really helpful in setting up the rsync. I've been calculating the data transfer rate by watching how full the destination drive is getting. It's cruising around 3.5-4 GB/hour, which sounds like it's in the ballpark for this config.
