How to access data via USB

I do have a USB-HDD, but the problem is how do I access any sort of GUI interface to run a backup job without being able to use the LAN port?
Unless the 'backup' button on the front of the NAS would dump all the data from the NAS to an HDD connected to the USB port on the front?
