When you create a backup, for the source select Local, click Browse and click on the NAS name at the top left. Then to the right you will see Time Machine as one of the options, select that.

Thanks mgdm. I have just got a new RN214 and needed to do exactly this. However, once we have created a backup of our Time Machine data, how can we restore it? I see no 'Time Machine' option when selecting 'Local' as Destination...

For the Global Time Machine for example you could log into AFP as the 'ReadyNAS' (no quotes) and copy the data back using your Mac. This would take quite some time.
As for private home shares the process would likely be similar but that would need some looking into.
