Thanks for posting this. My "spare" NAS are just 2-bay units, so there isn't a lot of experiments I can do.
Glad I could potentially help others. I learned a lot in the process, myself. As a bonus, the bad drive finally failed completely, so i know not to use it in any future experiments.
This is actually also useful for those who may want to use MDADM and BTRFS on a generic linux system. They can get XRAID-like expansion, just not automatically.
